Radio 270 broadcast from the Oceaan 7 anchored in the international waters of the North Sea 4 miles off Scarborough, and then Bridlington, Yorkshire, England. After major initial problems due to severe storms and a collapsed aerial mast, the station came on air on 4/6/66 on 270 metres, 1115 kHz with a Top 40 format which they called the "Fun 40", mixed with news, sports, weather and community information. The station was very successful and by June 1967 they claimed to have 4 million listeners - no mean feat considering the size and instability of the ship. The station closed down at midnight on 14/8/67 just before the British Marine Etc. Broadcasting Offences Act came into force.
